First career victory for McDwyer

The second annual Roaring Donkey Grand Prix took place last Saturday evening at Watergrasshill where an almost full compliment of seasoned and amateur drivers took to the track in an effort to become the recipient of the Donkey GP Perpetual Trophy.

Following Tommy’s maiden victory in last year’s event, many unauthorised ‘practice’ events had taken place prior to the race which made probable winner/s difficult to name.

After the track induction, the warm up laps brought about the first retirement of the evening when Pepe was unable to continue having agitated a previous back injury and, alas, had to sit out the proceedings.  Unlike his last venture at the track, Tommy managed to get around cleanly this time – though the same can’t be said for young Pipe who managed to beach his kart in the gravel at the entry to Ivan’s corner.

The 44 lap race turned out to be a three way dice with Alan McDonagh-McDwyer, Danny Mac & Nikki all vying for first position.  The lead was to change hands on many occasions throughout the race and the leading group managed to stay ahead of the rest of the pack with little effort.  The Boss managed to make 4th position his own having upscuttled half the field on his first lap.  The rest of the ‘drivers’ just weren’t in the same league on the night though a couple of spins did manage to upset the placings of young Shane O Brien and rookie Aoife Hayes who both fell victim to Ivan’s corner on more than one occasion and lost huge time.

Barbara managed to get the better of Paul again while drummer supreme Martin Dowell managed a steady 7th on his first visit. Tommy & Tiggy followed and Shane rounded off the top ten.

The prize giving was preceded by one of Sir Norman’s world famous barbeques – having spent the day cooking pig, Sir Norm and staff dished up a fine selection of nosh before heading back down east to finish off serving the same domestic hog.  Alas Terence couldn’t make it as he was heading of to Spain.

2008 date is Saturday August 23rd – book now to avoid disappointment!!!
